HISTORY OF GUSA

Formation of GUSA

Three Universities in Ghana namely, University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and Cape Coast University began engaging in biennial games in 1964 without any central organising body. Participating in the maiden West African Universities Games in University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1965 and realizing there exist in Nigeria, an association (Nigeria Universities Games Association, NUGA) which organises competitions for universities in the country, called for the formation of Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games in 1965 by the aforementioned Universities.
E.T. Kodzi, then coach of the University of Cape Coast, was tasked to draft a constitution for GUSA, which was adopted in 1969. Sam Blankson and E.T. Kodzi both from University of Cape Coast were the first President and Secretary respectively.

Several others played leadership roles in the growth of GUSA including His Excellency John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills of the University of Ghana (former President of the Republic of Ghana) who was President of the Association for fifteen (15) years.

Dr. Charles Domfeh and Mr. Timothy Mensah all from University of Cape Coast are currently the Acting President and Secretary of the Association.

Vision

  • To have a vibrant association that is highly regarded nationally and internationally in the development and promotion of sports and wellness in Universities in Ghana.

Mission

  • GUSA offers interesting  sporting activities for Ghana university students and provides opportunity for students to develop their talents in a variety of ways
  • The Association provides opportunities for interaction among students of universities as well as students from other universities in West Africa and the world

Growth of GUSA

With the initial membership of three (3), GUSA now has eleven (11) membership including

  • University of Education, Winneba,
  •  University of Professional Studies, Accra,
  • University of Development Studies, Tamale,
  • University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa,
  • University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani and
  • University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho
  • Ghana Institute of Journalism, Accra
  • Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Legon

Hosting GUSA Games

GUSA competitions are hosted by member institutions on rotational basis based on the facilities available in the institution
